Kevin began his career as an engineer in the Midlands car industry and used his MBA to get into early stage venture capital. From 1982 to 2009 he was responsible for making over 400 small venture capital investments, always seeking to address the problems faced by early stage businesses seeking finance. He is the author of several books and publications on the subject of funding a small business and managing small equity and loan funds.
In 1992 Kevin established East Midlands Venture Fund Managers (now MidVen) and managed the Midland Enterprise Funds for both East and West Midlands. As manager of the Birmingham Enterprise Fund he also established and managed the Creative Advantage Fund (the first early stage VC fund in the UK to return an overall profit). Between 2003 and 2015 he established and managed the Advantage Early Growth Fund in the West Midlands which co-invested alongside private investors and for two years running was the most active VC fund in England.
A conversation with a business angel investor in November 2009 about the problems of the banking crisis led to Kevin establishing the world’s first peer-to-peer finance platform specialising in secured business loans “ThinCats.com”. ThinCats now manages £800m of loan capital targeted at SMEs.
Kevin is now working on establishing a new co-investment VC fund in the Midlands; The Ark (www.arkhub.co.uk).
